I think the exploding was because it was a first try.

Whatever the process that they use to possess bodies it isn't fine-tuned, the first try was so crude that the pressure was too much and exploded.

As time passes "they" got better as it is said in this chapter, the melting still means they can keep the form, but they are getting better.
