Looks to me that he needs that first prince alive, Maizar might have been a great ruler but it seems like he's even better as an advisor to his brother. The two of them working together could be better than what the empire had before.

And honestly, not trying to stop the civil war that will weaken the empire seems like a horrible decision.

Okay, so Kail is making a strategic decision based purely on emotion, and while I don't blame him too much, I'm really hoping Eldran pulls through, if only because of how quickly he turned the tables on Maizar. The guy clearly needs to be kept around.
