Courtesy of this page, I figured out that "Meiji 37" meant 1904.

Wow... the yen really did go to shit. Did it seriously used to be worth that much? 1:10000 ?

Anyways... from what I gather, much of Hokkaido, including flora and fauna, is similar to stuff we'd have here in Britain... or maybe similar to parts of Scandinavia in cases. Not sure. Definitely more familiar to me than mainland Japanese stuff.
Funnily enough, that also extends to the Ainu. I mean they look much physiologically closer to western Europeans than the Yamato people do... though I suspect it is a convergent evolution thing due to climate similarities, at least in part.

Point probably being that I sympathise with the plight of the Ainu people because I'm also a kinda hairy bloke... and they gots awesome clothing.
