Japan’s pretty nasty cos they don’t even let you access transition unless you fit those rules. They try really, really hard to make sure that nobody ever has a trans parent. Pretty grim.

@zips As technologically advanced as Japan is, it's a real shame that their government is still controlled by a "family values" mentality. There have been some steps towards inclusivity, but if I remember correctly it varies wildly by prefecture.

This is such a fascinating story!

I didn't know anything about changing your gender or how the whole process works, so this has been quite eye-opening. I'm glad the author is talking about the challenges and difficulties so openly. 💪

This is really nice and educational. Author comedy is also on point. I read through from start to finish even without interest in the subject.

Thank you for the translation!

Japan, for being a "developed country" is REALLY medieval regarding LGBT and women's issues, and it doesn't seem like they'll change.

Not gonna lie, a plane that made pterodactyl screeches upon takeoff and landing would be metal AF. Well, figuratively, since the plane is already literal metal.

Been there, done that. Luckily my country allows you to change your name and gender just with a psych letter, no surgery required. But it's still nerve-wracking to have a judge who's never seen you before in their life decide if you're actually a girl.

@BCS Imagine having to quit your job after marrying or getting pregnant. Imagine being judged for your appearance and being sexually harassed with no one defending you. Imagine not being able to marry a person of your same gender. Japan is a very chauvinistic, very LGBT-unfriendly place. And just because yaoi, yuri and bara manga exist doesn't mean that they're very tolerant of the real deal.

Blows my mind how countries make such a big deal out of changing stuff like names and markers. All it took for me to change my id documents when I transitioned was a 10 dollar fee and 2 papers to change my name legally, and a 20 dollar fee and 10 papers with 2 signed and stamped by my MD and Psychiatrist to change my birth certificate which was done prior to surgery.

It's easy to do in most of Canada and society hasn't had any issues or fell apart because of it. Even the most conservative of places allow it to be done easily here in Canada, hell my conservative as fuck province even paid for my GRS in full.

Agreed, those are as much an indication of acceptance as the popularity of lesbian porn is here in the west, fetishization doesn't equal tolerance

To be fair, the rules listed were pretty reasonable tho. I mean some country straight up punish people with GID, mine included so to see these issues tackled in a legal way is pretty eye opening. And imagine if someone can just change their gender legally while still having their original gender sexual parts. That's just gonna cause more confusion and problems right?

@sonaldo it’s like that in my country and it extremely doesn’t cause problems, i mean, what kind of problems can you even envision that aren’t already problems by the facts of people’s bodies? all that ID lets you do is function in society, and not letting people update their ID is a subtle but effective form of eugenics

Imagine if a person that identity as a female but still have a visible male reproductive organ walked into a female section of a bathing house (using the example of from this manga) or in case of other country, say a female changing room. Calling this things eugenics are too much and the reason why LGBT movement are often ridiculed. Sure they have been oppressed before but society are turning for the better and this laws are made to accommodate them into the society better(like you just said in your comment regarding the id). So why oppose them? I'm not trying to provoke you or anything, just curious.

Not everyone is able or willing to have surgery. And consider the problem of someone who's been on HRT for a long time and look perfectly feminine (or masculine in the case of transgender men) but their ID doesn't match their appearance or looks. Now consider what kinds of problems that might make for them if someone sees that mismatched ID. It doesn't help that a lot of people are still not very accepting of transgender people.

Plus having a piece of paper say that you're a gender you feel you aren't can be a cause of mental distress for transgender people. Imagine if your documentations got your gender wrong and the only option to change it required a very expensive surgery.

Not to mention other issues with Japan's treatment of trans people, for example if you're a transgender woman and you're married to another woman, if you update your documentation to say that you're a woman, you are forced to divorce your wife. A manga by another transgender woman discussed the author's decision not to change her documentation after her surgery because she wanted to stay married to her wife.
