It seems there is a confusion regarding the status of series when people upload new chapters.

Manga are being marked as "Status: complete" because the print in Japan was completed, not because the scanlation was completed or not.

So in other words, a manga with (let's say) 100 chapters will be marked as "Status: complete" when there are just 5 chapters translated.

With the old batoto, the "on going" or "complete" status referred exclusively to the scanlations since that's what everyone went to batoto for: the translations. No one used it to mark if the japanese print was complete or not.

I see many series that are definitely NOT complete being marked a "complete" here just because japan ended printing them long ago, this could dissuade potential scanlation groups from taking a new projects, claiming "it's pointless to take this project, since it is [complete] on mangadex!".

Maybe a distinction is necessary.

"Japanese status: Complete"
"Translation status: On-going"

@PatchouliKnowledge The clarification is that the status says "Pub. Status" -> Publication Status, not just status. We also have end tags so that users know specifically when the final chapter of a series is. Although translation progress is a suggestion that's being considered.

"The manga page will be upgraded for support with all the languages. You will see different language descriptions, scanlation status etc depending on your display language setting" is the line in the megathread about the translation thing

Translation status will always be ongoing for every manga. Just because one group finishes translating a manga in one language doesn't mean it's complete.

Ah it would be great if we could have in the same area as the Pub. Status. We have something like:

Sanl. Status: Complete etc and have a flag of the Lang it was in.
Or
Scan. Status: CMP(*British flag image).
Then that might ease the confusion.
