Marry Grave. I am very lastingly pissed about that one, it was so fucking good and had so much promise. It was only just getting all the plot threads together before it abruptly and ungracefully was ended with no question answered. I know it's not going to happen but I really hope that someday it'll be finished properly.

That author's note at the end of Marry Grave always bums me out. It wasn't the most groundbreaking series up to that point, but the poor guy really had a lot of passion poured into that story. I appreciate his trying to explain what would have happened. Hope he gets back in the saddle.

As for a series that became good only thanks to the axe, Godspeed is my pick. It didn't have that good a premise, and looked like it was shaping up into a generic shonen battle series. The axe however did away with all that and forced it to focus on its strong point, the villain. I'm happy it did, since it's stuck with me over the years.

The backstory chapters were the series' strong point, and where the plot was actually starting. Before that the series felt like it was too busy finding its footing to even give much attention to the overarching story.

still, thats what happens when you drastically shift your focus. It was a hard turn to months, if not a year of backstory. It would of been better to trinkle it in, but not spend months of chapters that the main character doesn't even appear in.

@ColorfulSoy Marry Grave is a wonderful title, the art is pretty stylish compared to most manga, and the storyline takes a bit to start, but gets going fast. I think if you read it, you'll see exactly what happened to give it the axe. But, you get an ending for it, so it's not all bad at all.

better to have a rushed ending, than to never get a chance to end it at all. imo.

Except the genderswapped genre. I have read all of them that was mentioned above i think. Godspeed being axed because the author had died in an accident . The plot became different after the ninth chapter (if i am not wrong) and concluded really different (you could tell it was axed but still have many chapters after that and not a satisfying ending one. )

And just like the case with "the promised distopiary". https://mangadex.org/title/14763/yakushoku-distopiary-gesellschaft-blume The different thing is the author have a really bad drawing and the rework actually came out nice. But still, the original didn't came out succesful because the story have a depressing mc in it. But it was good and interesting to me. Give it a shot.
This one released nearly the same time with "yakushoku neverland". So the competition and the title that nearly identical probably make it more hard to survive

there's a yuri one I read that got axed, it was something about a vampiress lord, I think the author poked fun about getting axed and having to skip like 4 volumes of content.
I'll look for it later.

here it is... https://mangadex.org/title/20597/seifuku-no-vampiress-lord

Shina Dark: https://mangadex.org/title/1062/shina-dark-kuroki-tsuki-no-ou-to-souheiki-no-himegimi

Demon King awakens, human kingdoms sends their princesses (among other girls) to him for their own ulterior motives. There is ecchi, action and politics involved. Also lots of comedy. Author balances it quite well so it never becomes too serious or too light. It's a shame it ended after just 4 volumes. According to description these were meant as a prologue.

Sora x Lila: https://mangadex.org/title/15213/sora-x-lila-sorairo-no-lila-to-okubyou-na-boku

MCs girl Sora dies, but alien girl Lila record her mind and reconstructs body to match Sora's. Now they swap minds and take MC for a ride. Standard rom-com, quite fun in my opinion. Being axed actually "resolves" the story and I think this is also one of the pluses for it - it doesn't run forever without any progress.
