Beat them and either you win or they call back their ascended/divine founders to come back to the mortal world to try their luck.

After he left the group he found saved a woman and was brought to a human village where he became the protector. The old protector was a bunny who was chased out because he was starting to crave meat, but piggy didn't realize it. However, the responsibility was too much for him so he ran away in the night. He met the bunny who was hungry so he encouraged him to return and take up the role as protector. But then he realized why the bunny was chased out in the first place so he ran back, but it was too late and the bunny had eaten the woman's daughter and killed a bunch of people. He transformed and killed the rabbit, but the woman cursed him for telling the bunny to return and the villagers chased him out. Something like that. It's chapters 81 - 81.5.
