MC being stupid is in-character here and can be explained by him not being fully "there" mentally. Also we have more information than he does so it's not like he can make an inference beyond a shadow of a doubt. Still, him offering to off himself is a bit extreme because we know he still wants to save his waifu, so that's weird.
