Like, the other trials did require his powers (maybe he could have held his eyelids open with his fingers for the X-ray challenge), but for that last one, he could have saved himself so much trouble if he actually looked at the cards and figured out what the message and the last card was. He's smart, and it could have saved him so much suffering

His power is natural to him, just like our arm to us. Ofcourse, you can live only using one arm, but if you have two normal arm then living without using one arm is actually pretty difficult. Saiki is smart, but he can solve everything with his power alone so he have a tendency of using his power for everythings, in turn it make him stop thinking too deeply about the other way to do thing like his brother need to constantly thinking and analysis Saiki to grasp a hold of his abilities.
