It is a way for the living to say goodbye. Put aside the ceremony and the spiritualism for a moment, forget about what is expected from the departed soul. What we have left is a way for the living to cope with another's death. As for the dead? Who can say? In this tale, the dead have other matters to contend with, well beyond earthly affairs.
