This is actually pretty good, if a bit on the wild side (and of course gay as fuck—of which there is a decent amount).

None of this "our yakuza are somehow the good guys" stuff; this owns its premise and our protagonist does some terrible things, while nonetheless bearing out a quite romantic love story, sometimes even heartwarming. And it embraces the conflict inherent in that contradiction, without getting melodramatic or waxing poetic about it.

It also manages to pull off a bit of the gravitas of a romantic tragedy without actually ending tragically (observe, no tragedy tag, supra), which is a neat hat-trick. Though I did have to laugh a bit at the prison sequence—we're actually going there? Okay. But, it worked.
