I agree with all of you; Nephy isn't having any of it, she can tell that he's a nice guy.
And he is, actually.
He apparently started as a bandit himself, because he was starving. And then somehow came to learn how to manipulate magic at a high level. But by that time he was already an outcast from society, and it appears that in this world there are very few mages who practise any kind of restraint beyond the minimum required to maintain a source of supply and minimize the number of individuals actively targeting them. Which means the common knowledge information concerning mages is that they are, by definition, evil.
It seems he's avoided all magics that require causing people pain as part of the casting procedure; magic intended to result in someone's death is very different from magic that requires a death as a component of the casting ritual. He is willing to use magic as a means of killing an enemy, but he won't harm an innocent as part of the price required to complete a ritual.
The reaction from those in the wagon upon his rescuing them was telling; they really were astounded that there was such a thing as a good mage.
It will be interesting to see if he is able to build upon that reaction, to rehabilitate himself in the eyes of the local communities; he may now have the inclination to attempt just that, so that Nephy will be able to interact with others locally without undue fear; for himself, he might not bother, as he never had a place in society to begin with, or so it would seem, but out of interest in Nephy's situation vis a vis the locals, he might just do it.

What should we call this? He's not tsun-ing or anything, but it's...
If I were naming this series, I'd probably have gone with "Reforming an Demon Lord with his Slave Elf's Cuteness"
