Vol. 2 Ch. 8.5 - Chapter 8.5 (Kanzaki's Side)
Avatar
Nice parallelism between her sacrificing passing her test to help a woman give birth and her daughter sacrificing her mock exam to take care of a child she thought needed to go to a hospital. It serves both as an irony in that they did a better job of nursing in practice than what a paper test did by sticking by their "patients," which is the REAL test of a nurse, and in that they both scored insanely low and brought it up through help of Kanzaki.

Her daughter reminds him of her and so he treats her in the same way as he treated her mother, no more lenient and no less. It's a great character in hindsight that we get to slowly sympathize with him more and more and go from hating him and thinking he's the one abusing a student to the one that's helping a student the most and loving his character.

oh if Kanzaki knew Momoko since 10 years ago, then that changes a lot of things. contextualizes their conversation last chapter too, he knew why she was there

OK that was sad I wanted him to be kaede father XD

This chapter just raised a lot more questions...

@tywhoppity Probably insurance money. They already have their own house so it shouldn't be too hard as long as they don't spend mindlessly.

gal mum's kinda hot bgl
Avatar
@tywhoppity Actually, that is a really good question. Maybe it is Kanzaki? Just putting money in to an account. But it is still odd since both of them are clearly under 18, but I don't know the child laws in Japan. Perhaps the landlady has some sort of deal with the equivalent of child protection services.

A little confused here; if Touko has passed away, who is supporting Momoko and her brother?

I think his strictness is partly his own personality but also a desire to help students like Touko. It's not that he wants them to different from her in the sense that he thought she was bad, but more like I think he wants to make sure they stay on a successful course so that they can be whatever they want to be without worry. With Touko, though she herself was a nice person, she had to have the determination and help to get her grades up in order to have a chance at achieving her dream. Likewise, I think he hopes that if he gets these kids to take things seriously now, then they'll be in a position to choose what they do rather than being stuck with what's left.

Is he the ideal teacher? No, he's stiff and not very personable. That said just because he isn't anybody's best friend doesn't make him lousy. I get people have complaints he wasn't more attentive or sensitive to Momoko but keep in mind again he doesn't know all we do and he's a guy doesn't want to seem partial. Moreover, he's human just like everyone else. He won't necessarily notice (or appropriately understand) every little thing that's going on and she's not his only student. Teaching is a hard job, and I imagine its not easy to find the perfect balance between being supportive and still enforcing discipline, especially if he's not naturally a warm person. Are there ways he can improve? Sure of course, but personally I don't think he deserves to be condemned just because he isn't as likeable. I would like to see him have some character development but I don't think we're at that stage yet. I think the author is letting us get a feel of the characters as they are now and how they're connected.

the way this chapter is set up, is kinda weird? like its supposed to show that kanzaki is a hardass bc he doesn't want students to turn out like touko but he knows that shes a good person with a happy and stable life. she doesn't regret the choices she made as a teenager and he even admires her for them! why would he become a teacher to change students like her when both the reader and the character know that ppl like her grow up into happy and well adjusted adults with good moral centers

like this chapter isn't even abt kanzaki bc straight up he's not a good teacher and his character basically doesn't change. its more of an origin story for the mc as we see the circumstances under which her adoptive mom meets her and eventually becomes her guardian. We also see that she's inherited her caring nature from her adoptive mother and we establish more parallels between them in that they're both willing to set aside potential success for the sake of others. kanzaki wasn't necessary for this. he didn't grow or develop through this bc we know that he's still an asshole in the future and he doesn't care abt treating students the same way (or worse! those teachers would've let touko retake the test!) as his teachers treated touko. this chapter didn't even have to include him, and if it did it shouldn't have been centered around him unless its intent was to foreshadow a change in his present mindset.

basically the reason the author was able to effectively bait so many ppl into thinking kanzaki was an abuser was bc he literally acts like someone who doesn't particularly care abt his students as ppl. that's what he does, thats the text. going back on that to say that "actually he was a good guy all along" doesn't work bc the author hasn't laid the groundwork for him to like actually display that compassion and understanding through his behavior. a more effective way to develop kanzaki's character would be to have him become a good teacher through his interactions with his students, and to have him gain those skills as the plot progresses.

So we've got a good man and trash man... That's some variety of teachers for a school

@BDM130 I get where your coming from but his personality which is so stiff and stuck in his own ways, not caring that the way he acts is actually detrimental to the reason why he decided to be a teacher and is an all around heavy, intimidating and pressuring character is the type of character I hate cause I have met people like him before and it's never been a pleasant or good experience. He literally just instills fear.

Momoko's mom wanted to be a nurse but only failed cuz she was late from trying to help someone. He knows she didn't give any excuses and even asked her why she didn't explain the situation.
Momoko has the same dream. He refused to let her even take the test because she was slightly late. He saw her worn down and ignored her. He didn't even ask her why she was even working part time (and from this chapter he knows her mom has passed away for quite a while now). He just looks spiteful and hypocritical. His characterisation is all over the place. He was jealous of Touko's free spiritedness but is harsh/strict against Momoko for the exact same thing. It irritates me and makes no sense.

I only read this for Momoko and Wakaba.

(As for that bastard "teacher" Asakura, I'm just waiting to see him get killed off and karma do a number on the criminal)

@Cryozenics, @krisdreemurr Ohh I should have paid more attention, pardon

Geh. It's gal MC's mom?

@annietq who the hell are you talking about here? Kanzaki was not the one who is in relationship with Wakaba. That's Asakura-sensei. Kanzaki had nothing to do with the baby.
Avatar
@annietq you're mistaking kanzaki for asakura, the actual minor-creeping science teacher as revealed in Chp 5
Avatar
Thanks for the translation, but this chapter sucked.

Dude's a technically a rapist (for having sex with a minor) and also told her to straight up kill the baby. This chapter feels like the author was trying to say "uhh actually he isn't that bad, he became a teacher because he to help people like Touko!!1"

what the fuck

I genuinely hope Kanzaki is going to screw that other teacher over.
Actually, I think Kanzaki already has a hunch about the whole baby situation and that is why in previous chapters he e.g. put Momoko and Wakaba together for their orientation/internship and assigned them a kindergarten/nursing home.
At this point I also low-key hope that at the end he is just gonna adopt Momoko and Wakaba lol xD
Maybe there is also a specific reason why the mangaka chose a lawyer family for him beside it being a high-paying job. Imagine that at the climax Wakaba will end up in a fight with her mother which ends up leading to the court and with her mum being a public figure and everything her lawyers turn out to be Kanzaki's family but he crosses them 'cause nobody is gonna touch his precious students.
