Vol. 6 Ch. 27 - Door

this manga is probably one of the most realistic I've seen (minus the coincidental meetings). the feelings at play, the thoughts, even the awkwardness of the dialogue

That last page... let me get my goggles. Ah, there! Yeah, yuri route unlocked! Satoko definitely likes them young

@Yautja I think your worries and concerns are justified but i wouldnt say the author is writing herself into a corner just yet. The reason I say so is her use of her side characters. Satoko's sister, Satoko's boss/ex bf, Mashuu's classmates and the girl that seems to have a crush on him all have sizable roles to play in this story and have a huge influence on the two main characters. If this was like most romance manga where it seems to only revolve around the main pair then yes this story will eventually be written to a corner but the way it is now actually gives the author leeway to make meaningful plot. And im not talkin about "Domestic no Kanojo"-esque forced plot but a story that feels way more natural.

Atm one plot point she has yet to exploit is Mashuu's realization to wat a romantic relationship with Satoko would actually mean. So far Satoko's sister gave him an eye opener when she questioned the origin of his feeling for Satoko which was step one. Next step is him realizing that their age gap and how that reflects on them and society would effect them. So far he is still a naive boy whos probably met his first love and cant see past that but i cant wait till he starts becoming more aware, it will probably happen when that girl who likes him starts making her intentions clear......you should check out the new released raw shud be interesting....

Exactly, that's a distinction I didn't know how to vocalize up until now; their relationship feels ambiguous and awkward because the author doesn't seem to have a clear enough idea of where this relationship is going, instead of it being a naturally undefined and tense relationship as you'd find in reality. It's not a complex relationship, it's a tangled relationship. It's the distinction between a rat's nest (the fishing term) and a Gordian Knot.

Their romantic chemistry died way too early on. The author simply set too many non-romantic, even anti-romantic, tones. We as viewers have seen too much of their relationship; it's like if you have ever babysat a young girl who grew to have a crush on you, you'll almost never see her as a romantic partner, except in this case some external force is getting close to shoe-horning in romance tensions between you. I think they author's close to putting herself in a dangerous position, quality wise, and is very close to making a bad commitment. Right now it's just awkward, but it could easily become annoying and contrived.

@owlette
Yea, most age gap manga that fail, fail for that exact reason, the manga doesn't make the romance clear enough. It always comes out of no where and feels contrived. The author has almost written herself into a corner relationship wise. Betraying a reader's expectations is a lot different from surprising them. As things are, we're approaching the former.

@Yautja

I'm with you when you say that a romance between Mashuu and Satoko would feel unnatural or awkward.

Imo, the author doesn't know whether she wants them to either be friends, confidants or lovers. Granted, I'm fine if they don't end up together because I don't see their potential romance as the main driving force of this manga. Their relationship is indeed the focal point of the manga, as for how that relationship develops is what I'm assuming we're all here for.

If I'm being honest, to me, his chemistry with Satoko isn't geared towards romance either. The feeling I get from them is two people who can fill the gaps in each other's hearts and I don't mean in a romantic context. She provided him the attention and motherly love he was desperately seeking and his innocence gave her a feeling of fulfillment/provided for her a reason that gave value to and validated her existence as she was at the time, an empty shell that's just existing, but not really living.

@Yautja i actually thought at first this manga wouldn't try to pursue the romance aspect too much and only do it for the drama aspect but looks like the author is really going full romance now. i was hoping the story would be darker and that they wouldn't end up together but honestly idk how to feel anymore with how the author is portraying some scenes in a shoujo-esque style. i mean i'm still enjoying the manga so i'm just gonna go along with the ride

but yeah i agree it would be kind of awkward for them to end up together with how the relationship was developed in the beginning

@Yautja i think the author is stuck between deciding whether to make this a "coming of age" story for Mashuu, a "wake up/epiphany" for Satoko, and a friendship/romance? between the two, but overarall still a great story and art on top of it. Ive decided to read this with zero expectations just go with the flow....

That's the big problem with this manga, it's fantastic in almost every aspect, but the romance feels awkward and unnatural. Unlike Kono Oneesan, and like Usagi Drop, them ending up together just wouldn't seem right, imo. The author put too much of an age gap and too much of a parental / mentorship role in between them. I'm a shipper kind of person, but I think if the end up together, it'll be to the detriment of the manga.

Threesome ending coming.

@owlette the author said that Mashuu wud stay a "kid"(obviously with minor time skips) the whole manga and wont be an adult Mashuu so good chance they dont...but who knows if he changes his mind later on...
Avatar
i keep switching back and forth between whether or not i want them to end up together by the end. i really cannot imagine them together...

I'm really glad about this manga, it's not really a simple plot about a woman falling in love with a minor, it's more complex and dignified.
