@Mavado It depends on how you'd normally imprison someone for the crime, doesn't it? Like, if they got a life sentence sort of deal... an immortal would just get stuck there forever I guess, or at least until people forgot about them. The amount of time spent in prison is probably based both on the expected life spans of the beings being imprisoned and the ones doing the imprisoning.

Also the immortality thing is not something that was ever stated by the characters or a narrator or anything in this so I wouldn't put money on that even being a thing. I believe Guspaz's theory on it comes from the ones who got younger when they came here, but that implies a persistent magical effect that nobody has mentioned seeing in their status screens. There's no basis for it. For all we know that could be the case, but a lot of time would need to pass for us to be able to see that it works that way, and it's just as likely that the age reduction was a one off thing for new arrivals over a certain age because that happens all the time in isekai stuff. You might get a new body all together, or be returned to your best condition at the start, but usually after that you're a "normal" person going forward.

@Guspaz You talk about them being immortal, but none of them have actually lived long enough for 500 years to seem justified. Especially given the situation.

Despite noticing signs of mental instability, they remove the one person she's comfortable around, hand her off to a bunch of burly men who slap her in handcuffs and haul her off to a fat, bald nobleman (and he's met Mitsuba, he should know that he looks like a stereotypical villain to the Japanese). He couldn't have made a worse first impression without becoming an actual villain at that point.

I wouldn't have imprisoned her for 500 years (despite my doubt that she'll actually stay that long) even if she had killed someone at that point.

It's both, isn't it? If it was about rehabilitation, then the prison sentence would be based on the necessary amount of rehabilitation and likelihood of reoffending rather than the severity of the crime. When you're talking about people who commit serious crimes where they're being sentenced to several decades in prison, that's not about rehabilitation, it's about punishment. And if you're looking at a prison sentence in terms of punishment, then a 50 year sentence means something very different to somebody with 60 years left to live than it does to all these isekai'd Japanese people who don't have a fixed lifespan because their RPG cheats cause them to not age.

Look at it this way: is it really fair that a native worlder and an isekai'd person (or an elf, in your example), who committed the same crime, should get a punishment where one of them will come out of prison eldery and close to death, and the other person will come out of prison in exactly the same health and state that they went in? Is that really fair? Does that sentence, despite being an equal amount of time, really represent an equal punishment?

The native worlder might see a 50 year sentence as spending nearly all their remaining days in prison, while the person who doesn't age might see it as a really annoying inconvenience that has no long-term impact if they just wait it out.

@Guspaz
Is 500 years too much? The length of a punishment has less meaning to somebody who doesn't age. You're not taking away a chunk of their total lifespan like in the real world, so you need to make the period of punishment longer as a result.

What, ain't prison mainly used for disciplinary purpose, as in , rehabilitating the criminal so that they can function back into the society rather than just taking away a chunk of their lifetime? Their lifespan shouldn't matter for that.

Or are you saying elves would always get triple the sentence for any crime they did compared to human? Isn't that fantasy racism?

That poor boy is going to have white hair by the time he's 20.

@Moodyz
Can't we have Samoan wrestlers, or Thai ladyboys, or American politicians?

Why not? They'll make Isekai great again!
Avatar
Needs a little variety, imho. Why just Japanese people anyway? Can't we have Samoan wrestlers, or Thai ladyboys, or American politicians?... Okay, maybe not that last one.

Never seen so many JP people keep on being transported to an Isekai like this......This world must have something really amazing for "someone/something" to keep on sending the JP to that world.

And they just keep coming and they just keep coming and they just keep coming and they just keep coming and...

The thing is, Mutsuki doesn't seem to mind looking from her reaction on this chapter, so maybe she actually feels better in the closed space of prison. ¯\_(ใƒ„)_/¯
Avatar
@KCS Considering that she got to "experiment" the extend of her power with the goblin, and even have calmed down after that, that attack against the mustached nobles is still an attempted murder.
Then again, 500 years of prison is still too much.
Avatar
@KCS - Excuse me? Confusion being the reason Mutsuki lashed out does not somehow magically absolve her of attempting to kill people with her magic. Repeatedly. She's exactly where she deserves to be.
Avatar
So she gets teleported to a strange world against her will and lashes out in confusion due to not knowing what the fuck is going on, and also having acquired bizarre powers she doesn't understand, and their solution is to just lock her up forever and use her as a battery for their dungeon? That's pretty messed up, these people are definitely worse scumbags and more deserving of being locked up then her.
